My imagination runs wild thinking of other worlds. While science would say I should paint these worlds on a black background, I imagine them in a bright sun-filled blue sky with hints of wind and thin clouds The sky, clouds, and planets aren’t smooth, so the textures build into this piece show that while they may be imagined they could be real.

Winter sunsets in Florida are a spectacular palate of crisp colors. I long to touch the sky and clouds. I’ve incorporated texture into this painting to express that feeling.

Snorkeling in the Caribbean is my inspiration for this piece. The ocean is full of contrasts: light shallow vs. deep dark water; smooth surface pools full of rough coral. Texture and color shifts reflect the mysterious ocean floor.

When I think of Oklahoma, my heart is full. My family’s humble beginnings are in the southwest prairie. My great grandparents began a legacy there of hard work, love and faith, and hope for the future. There was no privilege as they worked the soil, survived world wars, the depression and did the best for their families. The layers in this painting represent the imperfect life of generations. The shapes speak of cropland, the lines rivers and roads, and the texture represents topography.

Kansas is no stranger to powerful storms. This painting was made after the Andover tornado on April 29, 2022. Thankfully no one perished, but the destruction was terrible. The images on social media of the tornado as it moved across that community were incredible-being a spectator from a distance to nature’s power.
